How it all started

Hi. I'm Steve. I have type 2 diabetes.

It hasn't been long since I was diagnosed but I'm already forgetting details so I've decided to create a blog so I can look back on stuff later on.

Sunday 29th January 2012 I passed out at work for less than a minute. I was 58 years 7 months old at the time.

A paramedic was called and arrived within 5 minutes despite being slightly misdirected by his sat-nav because our yard does not have a postcode.

The paramedic did a really good examination and took bllod sugar and blood pressure measurements. We agreed that there was no need for me to go to hospital.
I was sent home from work.

That evening, an out-of-hours doctor rang and insisted I went to see my own doctor the next day.

Monday, I took the day off and went to see the doctor. He asked me to go for a blood-test the following day, which I did.

Wednesday, my doctor phoned me to pick up a prescription and see the diabetic nurse. My blood sugar was in the twenties mmol/L. This was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetes.

I was given 5oo mg metformin to take 3 times a day and pushed my normal food consumtion from 1 meal per day to 3, trying to follow the diet guidelines suggested by the professionals.

This did not make any difference to my readings, so on 6th March I was given 80 mg gliclazide to take twice a day.

The combination of the two sets of tablets produced an immediate lowering of my readings to the range 6-11 mmol/L. As I was off work ath the time (pre-arranged holiday) and doing very little exercise, I was confident I could get good readings by lots of testing and adjusting my diet and exercise.

At the time of writing I am confident I can achieve this and my BG is looking better already although I clearly don't understand the effect of some foods on my body yet.
